“Son, can you hear me?” I’m vaguely aware of a man's presence but can’t open my eyes or move my mouth to reply. “I need an ambulance now at the underpass between Parliament and Grainger Street.” Then, a soothing hand brushes my shoulder. “Hang on, help is coming.”

Chapter Sixteen

The Fog

The fog clears momentarily, and a voice pull me out of the abyss.

I don’t know how much time has passed but I recall hearing others talking around me. I couldn’t place them then as much as I can’t place who disturbs my quiet now, but I know it is me they’re talking about.

“Dean, this is Doctor Khan, can you open your eyes for me?” I hear him clearly, but have no will to actually respond. “Dean, if you can hear me, open your eyes.”

A few seconds pass then my eyelid is lifted.

“Come on, love, open them if you can.” I recognise my mum’s voice and focus what little energy I have and briefly do as they ask. “That’s it.” Closing them again, one small act exhausts me. As hard as I fight it, the fog swallows me once more.
